This is a quick review of using the Metra Axxess ASWC in a 2009 Jeep Patriot with steering wheel controls. I wanted to retain my steering wheel controls and this unit did the trick in an incredibly short period of time. If your Jeep Patriot or Jeep Compass has the factory amplifier in it, you may want to go for Metra’s CHTO-03, as it gives you access to the factory amplifer and is pre-wired for the ASWC. I tested this unit with a JVC head unit and found that the interface instructions for Kenwood also worked for this JVC. The unit will self-detect the vehicle if you repeatedly hit the volume up control on your steering wheel, which is a 2 second job. The ASWC allowed me to retain the factory steering wheel volume up, down, station change, tune up, tune down, and mode change (FM to CD to whatever). If you’re interested in updating your Jeep Patriot or Compass, I’d recommend using the Metra ASWC to connect to your steering wheel controls. The controls work like they do with the factory deck, just as fast, and the install was super easy.
